For several days, I had been busy preparing food, and I finally let out a sigh of relief as I thought to myself, “Now it’s my turn to get something out of this!” Sitting down at the table with my friends, I cautiously asked, “Would it be okay if I prayed first?” Everyone responded with bright smiles, enthusiastically saying, “Okay, okay!”

To be honest, I had been so preoccupied with cooking that I hadn’t prepared a prayer in advance. While I could have simply spoken from the heart, I got carried away trying to make it sound impressive, which only caused my words to stumble and falter. Haha! Still, I believe that even though my English prayer was awkward, God understood the sincerity in my heart.

The essence of my prayer was this:

“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing us together with our swimming friends for this special time. We are grateful for the birth of Your children, which allows us to celebrate Christmas each year and share love with one another. Though we may be older, please help us to live each day with positivity. May those who are ill or burdened with worries find peace and happiness by trusting in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”

When the prayer ended, my friends burst into laughter and applause, filling the room with joy. I, too, felt warmth in my heart—not from the awkwardness of my prayer but from the precious time we shared laughing and connecting with one another.

These gatherings, held twice a year, have deepened our friendship. They’re not just meals but moments to share our hearts. I felt a renewed sense of gratitude to God for helping us cherish the small joys of life. After all, as we age, aren’t such moments the truest gifts? This evening, filled with laughter and prayer, will remain a cherished memory for a long time.

As the night comes to a close, I pray for the well-being and peaceful rest of my friends. Now, it’s time for me to ease my own tired body. Shalom.
